Apple said Tuesday it will expand its coding education resources with a free new Today at Apple session starting December 5. It’s “Coding Lab for Kids: Code Your First App.”

The new session celebrates and coincides with Computer Science Education Week, the company said.

The new Today at Apple session will roll out at Apple Store locations worldwide.

Here’s how Apple described it:

Designed to inspire participants ages 10 and up to explore app development in a fun, welcoming environment, the new experience is the latest in Apple’s library of resources to help students, families, and educators launch their journeys in the growing field of computer science.

It’s just one more edition of the free, daily Today at Apple sessions that people can sign up for in Apple Stores.

“Around the world, our stores are centers for community, where people of all ages are invited to discover the most innovative products, learn new skills, and explore their creative passions,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail + People.

“Whether you’re trying something new like coding, or looking for tips for getting started with a device, our free Today at Apple sessions offer something for everyone — and our talented team members are always here to support you,” she added.

In the new lab session, Apple Creative Pros will lead young coders and their parents or guardians using iPad and Swift Playgrounds, Apple’s code-teaching app.

“Working in the About Me playground, participants will use SwiftUI and a new, real-time app preview to customize and bring their app to life with fun fonts, background colors, Memoji, and more,” Apple said.

After launch, the new lab takes its place in Apple’s rotating Today at Apple programming. Another available session using Swift coding, but in a gaming context, will be “Coding Skills: Getting Started with Swift Playgrounds.”

Anyone with any level of experience can sign up for coding sessions at their local Apple Store.
