New in iOS 16 is the ability to follow your favorite sporting pastime with My Sports. It allows you to get the latest scores, read coverage from newspapers and magazines, see scheduled games and watch highlights.

It works across multiple apps, including Apple News, Apple TV and others. You can follow teams from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NWSL, WNBA and MLS. It also includes college football and basketball. Here’s how to set it up.

How to set up My Sports on the iOS 16 News app

Only on iOS 16 and newer

To use set up My Sports, you need to install iOS 16. It is out now for the iPhone 8 and newer models. iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura will be released sometime later in October.

You need to get started in the Apple News app. When you open up Apple News, you’ll see a splash screen introducing the feature.

Tap Get Started and tap Turn On to add your teams or tap Not Now to skip and come back later. If you don’t see the splash screen, scroll down inside the Apple News app until you reach the Sports section, and there you’ll see the Get Started button.

The next screen recommends teams from major sports in your area. As I am from Southeast Ohio, it incorrectly assumes I am interested in hearing about THE wrong public university named for our state and the NFL team from Pittsburgh.

Use the search box to find the correct answers and tap + to add them. Not all searchable sports teams support live scores information. AFC Wimbledon, for example, was tragically relegated to League Two of the EFL which is not supported.

You can also scroll down and browse by sport. If the sport has an arrow to the right, you can tap it and narrow down by league or team. Sports like golf, tennis, cricket, rugby and others can only be added as a broad news category.

Once they’re added, you can tap on Scores & Schedule to see past scores and upcoming games.

Scroll down to read news about all of your teams or tap on one to see what’s going on with any particular team. This is another instance where it gets confused, showing me news for Ohio State University instead of Ohio University. Computers are so powerful, but sometimes, exceedingly dumb in the most obvious way.

To add or remove teams from your list, you can always tap on the  button at the top and tap Manage My Sports. You’ll be presented with the same setup screen as before.
