Apple is renting 200,000 square feet of office space in North Carolina

Apple couldn't build its new home fast enough so it's renting a long-term Airbnb in North Carolina first.

Back in April, Apple announced that it would be committing $430 billion towards investments in the United States over the next five years. Among its other investments, the company announced the construction of a new $1 billion campus and engineering center at the Research Triangle area in North Carolina. Apple says that the new campus will create at least 3,000 new jobs.

While the campus still needs to be built, that does not appear to be stopping Apple from creating space for its new team now. As reported by MacRumors, the company plans to rent 200,000 square feet of office space in Cary, North Carolina. Metlife, which consolidated its three-building campus, is renting out one of those buildings to Apple.

Based on plans filed with the Town of Cary, Apple will be taking the entire seven-floor "MetLife III" building, which totals over 220,000 square feet. An initial phase of buildout for Apple includes the first three floors of the building, but documents from the project architect indicate that Apple has the "intent of occupying the entire building in the near future."

Development plans for Apple's renovation were filed with the town at the end of June and were approved on July 8 and 9, clearing the way for construction to begin. Filings indicate that initial renovations will cost nearly $5.5 million and are fairly limited in scope, with Apple largely retaining the open plan already in place and previously used by MetLife.

North Carolina had originally lost a bid to get Apple's new campus in its state to Texas back in 2018. However, a recent report said that, after continuing to offer Apple more financial incentives, the company decided to build its next campus in the state.

The new campus would continue to grow Apple's physical presence across the United States. The company already has a smaller office presence in a number of other states like New York and Michigan.
